[WORD PEOPLE] Let’s Talk About #Hashtags

|

Hashtags are the new search terms. When hashtags become popular, there is a new #trend. Measuring trends show a patchwork of big moments in Internet users’ lives. And let’s face it, if everyone is on the Internet, and everyone is hashtagging, the picture will be pretty clear. The idea of the hashtag is genius.

The practice, however, can be #irritating.

When used properly (and in moderation), the hashtag is effective and revolutionary. Yet, when released to the masses, it falls prey to excessive hashtag abuse. #thisiswhywecanthavenicethings.

There are two types of people: those who know how to use a hashtag and those who don’t. Browse your social media, and you will get a pretty #constructed #authentic idea of who your “friends” are. However, hashtags can also lead you to reconsider your connections.

Here are some hashtag archetypes found on my social media:

#TheAttentionMore – (Gym selfie) Feeling good #awesomejuicingdiet #livinglean #ilosthowmuch #breakupbod

#SympathySeeker – “You’re not over someone until you’ve stopped checking their Facebook.” Gotta laugh at yourself sometimes #slappedby the #coldharshhandofreality #mylife #wellthatsgreat #thankspinterest #knowitstrue

#TheLover – My husband brought me flowers today! #lovehimsomuch #flowersareforever #loveisallyouneed #ourloveisforreal #somedayyourprincewillcometoo

#TheHater – Just found out I didn’t get the job, so I’m STILL looking for work! #shouldhavebeenme #idiots #noonedoesitbetter #ihateyouall #jerks

#TheBlessed – (Insert mundane status or caption here) #blessed

Here are a few tips to help you #hashtag responsibly and effectively. Run through this checklist to avoid becoming a #cautionarytale:

  • Be relevant. Ask yourself if you really need all five hashtags for your four-word status.
  • Check your spelling. This will ensure that your tag is grouped with like items, and you won’t look #silly.
  • Don’t overdo it. Twitter recommends using no more than two hashtags per Tweet. #lessismore

Understand the power of the hashtag, and you will be #blessed.
